HAVERSTRAW BAY DESALINATION OPPONENTS: WE HAVE BEEN HEARD!

We have good news to share: we have made very substantive progress this spring and summer in putting the breaks on this proposal. Here’s the quick update.

This spring over 1,200 local activists submitted comments to state agencies during the public comment period and hundreds of people turned out for the overflow public hearing. In June, 24,000 signatures from New York State residents opposed to this project were delivered to Albany.

We want to thank all of you who responded to our call for action by calling, emailing, and writing letters either during the public comment period or since then!

Current status:
The very good news is that our opposition, joined together with 23 other local and larger groups, has
been heard! A decision has been delayed from July until later this fall in order to consider the environmental impacts more carefully.

At the same time, Assemblywoman Ellen Jaffee formally petitioned the NY State Public Service Commission asking them to reconsider the question of the need for more water. We will be mounting a campaign to get many more public officials to join her request.

In addition, Harriet Cornell, Chair of the Rockland County Legislature, and Alden Wolfe, Chair of the Legislature’s Environmental Committee, as well as many other Rockland officials and major environmental groups have asked state agencies to put the breaks on this proposal.

The public comment period is over, but it is essential that we not wait for a reply, but rather continue to build a public movement against this expensive boondoggle and for a sustainable water policy!
