Coalition: “Just Say No” on Haverstraw Desalination Plant

Posted by on Apr 11, 2012 | 0 comments

The Rockland Water Coalition wants to thank the many Rockland elected officials who reached out to the NY Department of State Division of Coastal Resources this last week, in order to secure a longer public comment period for review of United Water’s application for the Haverstraw Water Supply Project. We are also writing to ask  Rockland County elected officials to take a stand now on the issue of desalination for Rockland County. As you know, the public comment period for the Dept. of State Division of Coastal Resources was extended to April 20, to coincide with the close of the DEC...

United Water’s marketing all wet

Posted by on Apr 11, 2012 | 0 comments

NOTE: This letter originally appeared in the March 31, 2012 edition of The Journal News, in slightly different form. Mr. Shanley is mistaken when he writes that there’s a “well-established need for more water” in Rockland County. United Water Gets Public Rebuke From Jaffee

Posted by on Mar 11, 2012 | 0 comments

Hours before a final NYS DEC public hearing about United Water’s plan to build a desalination plant in Haverstraw, the water company received a vehement scolding from New York State Assemblywoman Ellen Jaffee (D-Suffern) about misleading ads running in a local newspaper. Calling the ad in Gannett’s Journal News a “shameless attempt” to suggest she is in support of the project, Jaffee says United Water’s ad promoting the project mis-characterized her position. “In United Water’s quest to build support for a Haverstraw desalination plant, they have used my name and my words in a...

Packed crowd debates United Water plant; foes urge alternatives to treating Hudson water

Posted by on Mar 8, 2012 | 0 comments

GARNERVILLE — Opponents and supporters of United Water’s Hudson River water treatment plant gathered for a standing-room-only public hearing at Haverstraw Town Hall on Tuesday. The water company wants to build the plant on part of Haverstraw town’s former landfill site, drawing water from the Hudson. At the plant, the river water would be purified by removing contaminants, salt and minerals. Then water would be disinfected before being delivered to homes and businesses in the area. The public hearing, organized by the state Department of Environmental Conservation, was to receive public...
